So my father was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma a year ago and ended up having a partial nephrectomy. About three weeks ago he had an MRI that revealed two tumors in his brain. The docs said that this is a very common place for RCC to travel. If metastatic cells travel via the blood and lymph, how is it possible for these cancer cells to get across the blood brain barrier to implant in brain tissue. From everything Ive learned the BBB is highly selective about what it lets across and it seems that a cell would be way to large to cross it. Anyone know how this happens? Sorry for the long description…

Cancer cells often cross the blood brain barrier this is how people get brain mets. They can attach themselves to circulating immune cells, there are several areas of the brain not behind the blood brain barrier and it is easier to cross when there inflammation.
