Will cracking your bone give you cancer?

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

My mom says it will give me bone cancer if I keep on doing it. So I don’t do it anymore and freak out when I do it on accident. But now that I think about it, it sounds a little far-fetched. Is this true?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

my grandma smokes like a chimney and her 5 year old cat just got diagnosed with bone cancer in her face. is it the nicotine in the apartment since this is the second cat that may have to be put down in the 6 years she has been living in her apartment. the other was a 14 year old cat that had kidney failure and a mass in his chest.

Does the US offer better treatment for bone cancer, than chemo, or radiation?

My Sister and my Mother have bone cancer, since they don’t live in the US I often wonder if they would have better treatment then chemo, and radiation, if they lived here. Thank you.

(More) Metastatic cancer or just a coincidence?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

My mom has been fighting cancer for quite a long time now, originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.Since then,it spread to her lungs in 2005 and her hip bone just this past winter. She did intense radiation in March and was put on stronger chemo drugs to fight it.(Has been on chemo, period, every week for 2 years straight now.)About a month ago,her right leg started hurting pretty badly. Her doctor said it was her sciatic nerve and was given everything from narcotic skin patches to muscle relaxers to help with the pain, along with physical therapy. It’s been a month and the pain is worse than ever, limiting her to all but complete bedrest. She insists it is arthritus or a disc in her back giving her trouble, but my sister and I are afraid the cancer has spread to her spine. She cannot stand or sit in a chair for more than 2 minutes at a time, and has to lay flat on her back in order for the pain to be bareable. The pain in her hip was never this severe,so I am not sure what is wrong…
Would bone cancer be causing this much pain? And can it spread so quickly they cannot catch it?She’s been on chemotherapy since 2005 and the cancer spread from her lungs to her hip while on treatment, so it wouldn’t be suprising if it spread again.I am afraid I know the answers to all these questions, but am looking for other’s opinions or experiences.Thank you so much in advance.
I made a typo. The pain is bareable laying flat on her stomach, not her back. (Not sure if that changes anything.)
My mom is only 53 years old and NOT ready to give up. She has been working full time for years now and doesn’t want to let this stop her. She worked 40 hours a week through her first chemo and radiation in 2000, and as much as she could after having her lymphnodes removed. She is off work until the pain is gone-period. Right from her cancer doctor’s mouth. She won’t just give up and wait to die, and that’s what’s really hard for her.

Do you think bone cancer is eligible for making a wish with Make A Wish Foundation? ?

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Okay so my friend was just diagnosed with bone cancer, she has a tumor in her hand, I would love to raise money for her so she could see the Jonas Brothers in person rather in concert, Make a wish could do that without all the really hard fundraising. But, I don’t know whether or not the foundation would consider her bone cancer, good enough? Please give me your opinion.

Do oncologists typically just "give up" on stage 4 metastatic breast cancer?

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I’m researching bone cancer that has metastasized from breast cancer. Recent tests showed an abnormality in my shoulder, and I am awaiting more tests.

- Originally, my doc told me the initial follow up tests showed nothing.
- At next meeting, I found this was not the truth, but for some reason, they were reluctant to tell me until they knew anything else (unlike my bc diagnosis progression).
- When I asked about surgery, if it was positive, my onc said that would be unwise as it would likely weaken the bone.
???????? *boggle* Who cares? We’re talking about cancer here.

After researching online, it appears that a very different attitude is taken towards metastatic bone cancer vs. original bone cancer. If I hadn’t already had breast cancer, my oncologist would have recommended surgery, I suspect. However, online sites suggest the goal at even the most remote and localized bone cancers is basically just to Make Her Comfortable.

I know I should not be surprised, as most stage 4 cancers are treated as death sentences, however, it seems logical that prognosis is lower than it should be because of this very attitude.

I’m becoming angry. I think I need to research metastatic cancers more and get more involved – regardless of my diagnosis.

Do you find the same things I’m finding? Are doctors still ignoring a Stage 4 cancer patient’s realistic changes for long term survival and avoiding expensive treatments as a result? Has no change occurred in this area of cancer advancement?
