How can I understand cancer statistics?

Monday, June 14th, 2010

I was recently diagnosed with non hodgkin’s lymphoma. I have seen statistics for 2009 and new cases were 65,980 and people who died from it in 2009 were 19,500. So it just seems like an awful lot of deaths. So I was just trying to figure this out the 19,500 people who died from it weren’t necessarily all included in the 65,980 they could have just been people who were terminal and diagnosed before or whose cancer came back? I just can’t find out anything about why 19,500 people died. Was it stage 4 or they weren’t responding to treatment or what? Also I can’t find any good statistics about the likelihood of it coming back once you’re in remission.

Is having Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Bone cancer at the same time common?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma currently and I’ve battled it twice before. I have been in remission after each new occurrence. The Hodgkin’s has come back in my abdomen and is stable. I have recently discovered that I have bone cancer in my leg. This is an entirely new cancer and not metastasized from the other. I am scared. What type of treatment is normal for this type of situation? Am I going to be able to come back from this?

I need to find research data on Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients who had stem cell transplants. Can anyone direct me to the right spot? Basically prognosis information, issues of recurrence, etc.
